BUDAPEST TO VÁC SECTION OF MAIN ROAD NO. 2

Main Road No. 2 represents a significant element of the Hungarian road network, and it has a great international significance as well, forming a portion of the European road network as road E 77.

During the past approx. 20 years several studies and analyses have been performed for the realignment of this road in order to bypass urban built-up areas. In 1990 the preparatory work was resumed for developing Main road No. 2 over and alignment bypassing settlements, relieving them in this way of the deleterious environmental impacts of cross-town traffic, and providing for a safe and up-to-level road connection. The alignment of the bypass road to be constructed as a double-lane main road at first but intended for upgrading into an expressway later in the far future was implemented by three construction stages. The section beginning at the grade-separated junction at Sződ (road No. 21112) to bypass Vác town was constructed at the first phase, in association with the new link of main road No 12.

The second stage covered implementation of the section bypassing Dunakeszi and Göd, of which the section from 18.2 km to the grade separated junction of Dunakeszi (road No. 2101) was already constructed to have four traffic lanes.

The third stage completed the alignment bypassing several settlements by linking main road No. 2 into Budapest capital.
