Formerly the passengers at Nyíregyháza station had access to the trains through rail level platforms. While the boarding and disembarking passengers crossed the rails, various railway operations took place at the adjacent tracks, such as shunting and cleaning. In order to handle the extremely high passenger traffic (40 000 a day, or 6 000 in peak hours) in a safe manner without accidents and with acceptable level of service it was necessary to establish raised platforms, which are accessible through underpasses.
The planned platforms and the related tracks occupy the free area situated between the terminal building and the present No. 1 track. The alignment of the track had to be determined in a way that in addition to ensure the proper effective length, the existing buildings (warehouse, storages, etc.) could be maintained. The planned station configuration includes one main platform and two island platforms to serve five tracks, which are accessible through a 6.0 m wide passenger underpass. In addition to the track network, the design included the underpass, outdoor lighting and water engineering.
