Kaposvár town is divided into two parts by the Kapos river and the railway line. Nearly half of the local and transit traffic between the northern and southern parts of the town has been practically carried by the so called "Donneri" overpass of Main Road No. 67.
The possibility for construction of a new alignment for the road, bypassing the inhabited areas, became feasible by the early eighties. The construction was divided into three phases. In the first phase a new overpass with four traffic lanes and a grade separated interchange were completed. The further sections were designed with two traffic lanes, but the possibility of adding two more lanes was taken into consideration as well. The geotechnical conditions required the use of geotextil in the road foundation in some places, and in order to shorten the implementation time, it was necessary to apply reinforced earth retaining wall at the grade separated interchange.
The realise the complex system of facilities, it was also necessary to prepare the designs of four minor bridges, electric and postal cables and outdoor lighting.
