Trunk road No. 4 has an important role in linking the capital city with the eastern part of the country. Implementation of the Szolnok by-pass became necessary because of the dynamically increasing traffic. At determining the alignment of the bypass road it was necessary to ensure harmony between the road network master plans and the development plans concerning the region.
The new alignment also collects the traffic of the industrial area situated on the southern district of the town, handling it outside the dwelling area. It also offers a new crossing over the Tisza river. Total length of the bridge – considering the flood zone as well – is 678 m, including a span of 120 m for the channel bridge. A new high water dam had to be designed over a length of 6.3 km under the scope of the same project.
The road section to bypass the city is to be implemented by three phases as a primary trunk road with two lanes, of which the busiest middle section was first opened to traffic. This section is 3,5 km long, and includes the new Tisza bridge with cycle tracks.
